Abstract
In atomic physics, spin-orbit (SO) interaction enters into the Hamiltonian from a nonrelativistic approximation to the Dirac equation. This approach gives rise to the Pauli SO term. It is well known that atomic spectra are strongly affected by SO coupling. In a crystalline solid, the motion of electrons is characterized by energy bands. Here also, SO coupling has a very profound effect on the energy band structure. In the present work we shall analyze quasi-two-dimensional semiconductors such as quantum wells (QWs) and heterostructures.
