Abstract

This paper proposes a new technology for document compression developed around the sparse network of Cellular automata (CA). It identifies the different class of segments in a scanned document – such as text, image, and background. The compression of the document is then performed on each segment employing the CA based compression technique specially designed for that class of segment. It results in a significant improvement in online document compression with no visible artifacts and ideally suits for low cost high speed hardware realization.
