Abstract

At the beginning of the new millennium industrial manufacturing is only slightly older than two centuries. In this, from a historical viewpoint, short period of time the production conditions have changed fundamentally. Especially in the last century, they altered faster and faster. How will it be in a hundred years? Forecasts concerning this are even more likely to fail than those made in 1900 for the year 2000. Nevertheless there are some grave developments which will be realized with high probability, at least if our current behavior does not change fundamentally. These developments will have to be taken into account when designing new concepts on how we will produce and consume in near future. Supply chain management seems to be such a concept worth further developing in order to be sustainable in this sense. The papers collected in this book may be considered as contributions to this aim.
