Zusammenfassung
Der Protestantismus ist ein besserer Nährboden für die Demokratie als der Katholizismus. Für dieses von vielen geteilte Pauschalurteil über den demokratischen Vorteil des protestantischen Glaubens lassen sich – offensichtlich – eindeutige empirische Belege vorweisen: alle früh demokratisierenden Nationen sind protestantischer Prägung, katholische Länder gehören durchweg zu den Nachzüglern – Länder in denen die Durchsetzung säkular-demokratischer politischer Systeme erst sehr spät und häufig auch erst nach größeren Konflikten gelang. So hat sich nur die katholische Kirche – Stichwort „Kulturkampf“ – regelrechte Schlachten mit dem sich säkularisierenden Staatswesen um Deutungs- und Erziehungshoheit in fast allen gesellschaftlichen Belangen geliefert. Noch gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts untersagte der Papst in Rom den italienischen Bürgern die Teilnahme an demokratischen Wahlen. Der Vatikan und Teile der katholischen Kirche suchten zeitweise in ihrem Abwehrkampf gegen die Kräfte der Säkularisierung sogar den Schulterschluss mit den faschistischen Führern und Systemen Europas. Erst die doppelte Erfahrung von Kommunismus und Faschismus ließ sie ihren Frieden mit dem demokratischen Staatswesen finden, wie es dann während des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils in den 1960er Jahren schließlich auch formal bestätigt wurde. Nichts dergleichen passierte in den protestantisch geprägten Nationen. Hier entwickelten sich säkularer Rechtsstaat und demokratisches Regierungssystem in friedlicher Symbiose von Staat und Kirche (vgl. z.B. R. Rémond 2000; S. Roßteutscher 2009).
