Der Beitrag hat das Ziel zu zeigen, wie die sozialwissenschaftliche Netzwerkanalyse als Paradigma auf dem Gebiet der Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung sinnvoll eingebracht werden kann. In der neueren netzwerkanalytischen Forschungsliteratur (z.B.: Shan et al. 1994; Hagedoorn/Schakenraad 1994) ist bereits die Bedeutung des relationalen Ansatzes für die Analyse von Prozessen der Wissensgenerierung herausgearbeitet worden. Die methodischen und theoretischen Weiterentwicklungen sind bisher jedoch selten dazu genutzt worden (eine Ausnahme: Owen- Smith et al. 2004), Theorien der Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung einer empirischen Überprüfung zu unterziehen. So wird in der Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung prominent die These vertreten, dass Forschung und Entwicklung zunehmend in heterogenen projektförmigen Kooperationsarrangements abgewickelt werden (Gibbons et al. 1994). Eine Folge dieser Entwicklung, sei eine zunehmende Verflechtung von Wissenschaft- und Industrie (Kaufmann/Tödtling 2001; Schmoch 2003), wodurch ein neues Muster institutionelle Wissensproduktion entstehen sollte, welches die Grenzen zwischen universitärer und Industrieforschung verwische (vgl Gibbons et al. 1994). Der Beitrag geht mit Hilfe struktureller sozialwissenschaftlicher analyseinstrumente der Frage nach, inwiefern sich ein solches Muster empirisch erkennen lässt. Deutlich wird dabei, dass die analysierten Strukturdifferenzierungen möglicherweise nicht allein mit Hilfe etablierter netzwerktheoretischer Annahmen interpretierbar sind (Granovetter 2000; Burt 1992; Gargiolo/Gulati 1999).
