Philippe C. Schmitters Biographie spiegelt das Leben eines Wissenschaftlers wider, der sowohl in der ganzen Welt wie auch an den ersten akademischen Adressen zu Hause ist. Geboren am 19. November 1936 in Washington, D.C., verbringt er bereits Teile seiner Schulzeit in Frankreich. Das Studium der internationalen Beziehungen, Geschichte und politischen Ökonomie in den Jahren 1954 bis 1961 führt ihn von Dartmouth (USA) über Mexiko nach Genf. Zurück in den Vereinigten Staaten, promoviert Schmitter von 1961 bis 1967 unter anderem bei Ernst B. Haas und Seymour M. Lipset an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkeley — unterbrochen von einem Forschungsaufenthalt in Rio de Janeiro — in vergleichender Politikwissenschaft mit einer Dissertation über Entwicklung und Interessenpolitik in Brasilien. Ab 1967 durchläuft Schmitter an der Universität Chicago die akademischen Stationen bis zum Full Professor für Politikwissenschaft. 1985 wechselt er an die Universität Stanford, eine der renommiertesten Hochschulen weltweit, wo erbis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1999 wirkt. Danach tritt er eine Professur am Europäischen Hochschulinstitut in Florenz an, wo er schon in den Jahren 1982 bis 1986 tätig war (Schmitter 1997). Zur Zeit (Mitte 2005) ist er dort Professorial Fellow.
