Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung der empirischen Sozialforschung ist untrennbar mit dem Fortschritt ihrer Datenbasis verbunden. Obwohl die ersten Untersuchungen bereits im 19. Jahrhundert durchgeführt wurden, waren über lange Zeit die Forschungsmöglichkeiten durch eine karge Datenlage geprägt. Dieses intensiv wahrgenommene Defizit wurde bald zum Motor der Bemühungen, die Datenlage systematisch zu verbessern. Dies gilt nicht nur für die Menge der verfügbaren Daten sondern auch für ihre Qualität und Vergleichbarkeit. Der Zugang zu bereits vorliegenden Forschungsdaten erlaubte die Auswertung auch unter neuen Forschungsfragen (Sekundäranalyse) und erschloss neben weiteren Querschnittsanalysen zugleich eine Datenbasis mit Potential für die Analyse gesellschaftlichen Wandels.
