Zusammenfassung

Die neuere soziologische Auseinandersetzung mit ‚Biographien‘ geht von der ursprünglichen Bedeutung des griechischen Wortes aus: Es handelt sich um Beschreibungen (graphein) des Lebens (bios). Dieser Ausgangspunkt ist theoretisch kompatibel mit dem kommunikationssoziologischen sowie in methodischer Hinsicht mit dem textanalytischen Zugang zum Gegenstand der Lebensgeschichte. Daher unterscheidet sich die soziologische Biographieforschung von der eher sozialstrukturell analysierenden Lebenslaufforschung, die sich mit den Chancen des Eintritts spezifischer (sozial institutionalisierter) Lebensereignisse befasst (Mayer 2001). Der soziologischen Biographieforschung geht es insofern um das ‚Wie‘ der Beschreibung des Lebens.
