Zusammenfassung
Simmels Einstufung als Soziologe in Großbritannien und Nordamerika spiegelt sowohl seine eigene intellektuelle Laufbahn als auch die weltweite Entwicklung der akademischen Fachrichtungen im 20. Jahrhundert wider. Der Streit um die Grenzen zwischen Philosophie und Sozialwissenschaft, die von Anfang an Simmels Rezeption bestimmt, führt zu einer fragmentarischen Übersetzungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte, die die philosophische Bedeutung seiner interdisziplinären Denkstrategien verschleiert. Jedoch erlangt sein Denkstil, der die Spaltung von Philosophie und Soziologie überschreitet und in Frage stellt, über anglophone Hörer seiner Berliner Vorlesungen so wie spätere Emigranten einen breiten, wenn auch oft anonymen Einfluss.
