Zusammenfassung
Waren die fünf Bücher der Tristia von etwa 8–12 n. Chr. entstanden, so folgten die vier Bücher der Epistulae ex Ponto ungefähr in den Jahren 12–17. Ovid, den eine relegatio des Kaisers, wie er selbst sagt, nach Tomi an der Schwarzmeerküste verbannt hatte (zum Terminus vgl. Bretzigheimer 1991, zur Datierung z. B. Syme 1978, bes. 42–44), sollte Rom nicht mehr wiedersehen. Die vier Bücher elegischer Briefe spiegeln den begrenzten Themenradius der Tristien, tragen ihn fünf Jahre weiter und variieren ihn; sie lassen sich als letzte poetische Einlassung des Dichters lesen, die jedoch von der Hoffnung auf Fortsetzung einer Dichterexistenz unter anderen Voraussetzungen getragen wird.
