Die Frage, ob die Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften einen Animal Turn brauchen, lässt sich auf mindestens zwei Wegen einer Antwort zuführen. Man könnte von einem impliziten Vorverständnis dessen ausgehen, was der Animal Turn ist, und sich die Frage stellen, was eine solche Wende motiviert oder erforderlich macht. Man könnte aber auch damit beginnen, den Begriff einer Wende zu klären und auf dieser Grundlage Aussagen darüber treffen, was ein Animal Turn sein müsste, wenn er erfolgen sollte.

Bachmann-Medick (2006) verweist in ihrer Darstellung der Cultural Turns in den Geisteswissenschaften auf eine ganze Reihe von Wenden (Interpretive Turn, Performative Turn, Reflexive Turn/Literary Turn, Postcolonial Turn, Translational Turn, Spatial Turn, Iconic Turn) und macht einleitend den Linguistic Turn als ‚Urwende‘ dingfest. Sie meint, dass eine Wende sich auszeichne durch einen fundamentalen methodischen Umschlag der „Gegenstandsebene“ in „Analysekategorien“ bzw. durch die epistemologische Verwandlung der „Erkenntnisobjekte“ in „Erkenntnismittel“ (ebd., 26). Zudem müsse eine Wende mehrere Disziplinen übergreifen (ebd., 79).
