›Beat‹, ›beat music‹ oder ›Beatmusik‹ (franz. ›Yé-Yé‹) bezeichnet ein Genre der 1960er Jahre, das seinen Ursprung in Großbritannien hat und in der Rezeption, Aneignung und Umwandlung diverser US- und afroamerikanischer Stile gründet. Junge Amateurund Schulbands finden sich seit Ende der 1950er Jahre zusammen, um Songs des US-amerikanischen Rock ’n’ Roll und Rhythm & Blues, aber auch der ›girl groups‹ des Tamla Motown-Labels nachzuspielen, woraus sich mit der Zeit ein eigenständiger Musikstil entwickelt (vgl. Villinger 1983, 14; Wicke 1998, 250 f.; Dürkob 2015, 16 ff.).
