Angeregt durch das Bild eines »uralten, verschimmelten Gottes«, der »Vorwegnahme des Exils« (SR 305), begann Döblin seinen Roman Babylonische Wandrung oder Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall zwischen Ende 1932 und Ende Februar 1933 in Berlin in einem Klima »der Stagnation, [die] das geistige Leben erfasste und es lähmte« (SLW 267).
