In dem Beitrag ›Von Benjamin sprechen‹ beschreibt George Steiner ein Treffen mit Gershom Scholem im Wintersemester 1972/73 im Hotel Schweizerhof in Bern, bei dem die beiden – zuerst spielerisch, dann mit »tiefe[m] Ernst«– »zwölf Voraussetzungen für einen Studenten«, der an einem Seminar über Benjamin teilnehmen will, festlegen. Die beiden unterhalten sich am gleichen Tisch, »an dem er [scil. Scholem] und Walter Benjamin miteinander gegessen hatten.«
