Zusammenfassung
John Dewey (1859–1952) wird neben Charles Sanders Peirce, William James und George Herbert Mead zu den Gründervätern des Pragmatismus gerechnet. Er wurde 1859 in Burlington, Vermont in New England geboren. Sein Vater, Archibald Sprague Dewey, war ein gebildeter Kolonialwarenhändler; seine Mutter, Lucinda Dewey, prägte sein frühes Menschen- und Gottesbild durch ihre pietistische Frömmigkeit. In seinem autobiographischen Essay From Absolutism to Experimentalism datiert er seinen Entschluss, Philosophie zu seiner »Lebensaufgabe« zu machen, auf das Jahr 1883 (FA 150/16); in der Folge nahm er seine Studien an der eben erst gegründeten Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore bei George Sylvester Morris auf. Nach einigen Jahren als Dozent in Michigan und Minnesota erhielt Dewey 1894 einen Ruf an die – ebenfalls junge – Universität von Chicago. Mehr als sieben Jahre brachte er sich dort neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit in das Projekt einer Laboratory School ein, in der seine pädagogischen Überzeugungen zur Umsetzung kommen sollten. Von 1904 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 1930 lehrte er an der Columbia University in New York. Noch lange nach dem Ende seiner aktiven Zeit als Hochschullehrer setzte er seine Publikationstätigkeit fort; er starb 1952 im Alter von 92 Jahren.
