Als Heine 1851 zur Abfassung von »Jehuda ben Halevy« schreitet, entsteht sein langes Gedicht zu einem wichtigen Teil auf der Wissensgrundlage eines zuvor studierten Buches: »Die religiöse Poesie der Juden in Spanien« von dem Rabbiner Michael Sachs.
