Zusammenfassung
Shakespeare ist wie kein zweiter Autor Repräsentant einer internationalen Kultur, vielleicht sogar einer Form von Weltkultur. Liegen die Wurzeln dieser weltweiten Verbreitung — vor allem außerhalb Europas — im britischen Kolonialismus, hat die oftmals jahrhundertelange Präsenz zu Aneignungsprozessen geführt, die Shakespeare immer weniger als englischen ›Import‹, sondern eher als festen Bestandteil der eigenen Kultur erscheinen lassen. Die Eingliederung in unterschiedliche lokale oder regionale Traditionen wurzelt aber auch in einer Kommodifikation Shakespeares:
Shakespeare participates both in what might be called the commodity universalism of contemporary global capital (Shakespeare and Coke as world-historical consumer goods) and in an effort to realize the contestatory possibilities of theatrical performance. (Worthen 2003, 122)
