Zusammenfassung
Das Wort ›Räuber‹ (mhd. ›roubære‹, ahd. ›roubare‹) stellt eine Ableitung von ›Raub‹ dar, das wiederum von einem Verb mit der Bedeutung »brechen, (ent-) reißen« abstammt. Im biologischen Kontext bildet das Wort eine Kurzform des mindestens seit Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts verbreiteten Ausdrucks Raubtier.1 Während als ›Räuber‹ im gegenwärtigen biologischen Sprachgebrauch eine besondere Lebensform der Ernährung beschrieben wird, ist der Ausdruck ›Raubtier‹ für eine taxonomische Untergruppe (eine »Ordnung«) der Säugetiere in Gebrauch.
