Zusammenfassung
Vereinzelt seit Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts werden Gruppen von Organismen, die vielgestaltig sind, aber doch zu einem Gestalttyp gehören und miteinander verwandt sind, polymorph genannt. Der Ausdruck (»Polymorpha«) erscheint in einem von T. Moffett um 1589 kompilierten Werk über die Insekten, in dem das Phänomen (in Bezug auf Bienen) als ein Spiel der Natur (ludus naturae) erklärt wird (Verfasser dieser Passage ist vermutlich Moffet selbst).1
