Zusammenfassung
Zu Beginn der Datenverarbeitung war die automatische Verarbeitung von Daten mit Hilfe von Programmen das Hauptziel. Programme, die vom Prozessor bearbeitet werden sollen, müssen für die Dauer ihrer Abarbeitung in den Hauptspeicher geladen werden. Die dauerhafte Speicherung der Programme und ihrer Daten erfolgt auf Massenspeichern. Mit zunehmendem Einsatz wurde der Computer mehr und mehr zur Ablage und Verwaltung von großen Datenbeständen verwendet.
