Zusammenfassung
Die Berichterstattung über die Möglichkeiten elektronisch vermittelte Kommunikation (E-Mail-Kommunikation) gehörte in den letzten Jahren zum Standardrepertoire der Massenmedien. Das Internet (und im speziellen das World Wide Web) ist „hype“. Obwohl alle einigermaßen seriösen Beiträge zu diesem Thema betonen, daß das Internet, ursprünglich als Kommunikationsmittel des amerikanischen Verteidigungsministeriums konzipiert, zwischen Mitte und Ende der 70er Jahre vom wissenschaftlichen (universitären) Bereich praktisch „usurpiert“ wurde (vgl. zu einem historischen Überblick Reid 1991), wurde und wird die wissenschaftliche Nutzung des Internet in populären Darstellungen meist nicht ausführlich thematisiert (wohl auch weil dieser Nutzungsaspekt für eine breite Öffentlichkeit der am wenigsten spektakuläre ist). Dennoch hat E-Mail-Kommunikation (nach einer informellen Umfrage im Kollegenkreis des Autors) an vielen wissenschaftlichen Instituten bereits einen großen Teil der brieflichen Kommunikation ersetzt: Sie ist billiger und v.a. bei weitem schneller als der übliche Postverkehr.
