Zusammenfassung
Zahlreiche Forschungsarbeiten weisen nach, dass kleine wie auch junge Unternehmen jeweils spezifische Stärken im Hinblick auf Innovationen haben. Insbesondere kleine und junge Unternehmen sind daher in der Wahrnehmung von Innovationspotenzialen und ihrer Ausschöpfung großen Unternehmen oft überlegen (Gompers 2002, Henderson 1993, Pryor und Shays 1993). Aus evolutionstheoretischer Perspektive lässt sich diese Überlegenheit vor allem darauf zurückführen, dass Unternehmen mit wachsender Größe und zunehmendem Alter träger werden („organizational inertia“), weil sich ihre Prozesse formalisieren, ihre Strukturen verfestigen, künftige Entwicklungspfade durch bisherige Investitionen eingeschränkt werden und sich das organisationale Informationssystem in hohem Maße auf bestehende Aktivitäten ausrichtet (Aldrich und Auster 1986, Hannan und Freeman 1984, Kieser und Woywode 1999). In der Folge büßen Unternehmen an Fähigkeit zur Transformation und Innovation ein und laufen damit Gefahr, ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit aufgrund von Veränderungen im Unternehmensumfeld zu verlieren (Altman und Zacharakis 2003, Covin und Miles 1999).
