Abstract

There are numerous reasons to dedicate an essay to Hans-Dieter Klingemann’s contributions to party manifesto research. In 1979, Klingemann was a founding member of the Manifesto Research Group (MRG) of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR). This international group of political scientists set out to measure party policy positions over time and between countries by means of content analysis of election programs. In earlier work, Klingemann devoted his talents to the measurement and analysis of a range of political texts. His interest in content analysis dates back to his time at the Zentralarchiv für empirische Sozialforschung der Universität zu Köln, ZA (1965–1974) and at the Zentrum für Umfragen, Methoden und Analysen, Mannheim, ZUMA (1974–1980). In those settings, he contributed to the development of Textpack (Klingemann 1984), a program that is still widely used in computerized content analysis. During the 1960s and 1970s, he applied the method to diverse topics such as coding professions (Schönbach and Klingemann 1978), societal change (Klingemann 1979a), open-ended questions in questionnaires (Klingemann 1979b, Klingemann and Schönbach 1980), cultural indicators (Klingemann, Mohler and Weber 1982) and citizens’ assessments of political parties (Klingemann 1983).
