Unternehmen sind damit konfrontiert, immer schneller und kundenspezifischer auf ihre Märkte zu reagieren: Zeit (kurze Produktlebenszyklen, Innovationsdynamik) und Raum (Internationalisierung der Märkte, kommunikative Erreichbarkeit im „Weltdorf“) verdichten sich immer mehr und erscheinen uns in ihrer wachsenden Komplexität oft chaotisch und kaum vorhersehbar — damit auch kaum planbar.
