Abstract
All social institutions are dynamic. Whether these systems of rights, rules and decision-making procedures are formal or informal in character, broad or narrow in terms of their functional scope, global or local with respect to their spatial domain, they change continually in response both to endogenous pressures and to exogenous forces. It follows that the study of institutional change should loom large on the research agenda of analysts seeking to improve our understanding of social institutions.
