Abstract
Longitudinal studies beginning in early age give information on developmental paths of children and adolescents in different socialisation contexts, on early precursors of striking behavior in youth and adulthood and on risk and protective factors in human development. Such information supplies an important scientific foundation for children’s, youth and family policies. The contribution gives a survey of large and longrunning longitudinal studies in foreign countries. This article provides an overview of some European studies, the British Cohort Studies and some Scandinavian investigations. In USA and Canada extensive research programmes are coordinated in line with the demands of policy and practice. Finally some trends visible in longitudinal research are pointed out and the question why Germany still not disposes of an adequate longitudinal study is discussed.
