Abstract
The motivations for checking and using smartphones are diverse, but predictable. This chapter examines how smartphones satiate instant gratifications for information, social interaction, and the desire to be entertained. This gratification informs the level of habit, compulsion, and addiction to personal devices. This chapter interprets smartphone behaviors from a neurological perspective and questions the degree to which smartphone regulation falls on the individual user and on the developers of the technologies.
