Abstract

This essay examines former First Lady Michelle Obama’s advocacy for Black females in her role as First Lady of the USA. By examining her life from growing up in the South Side of Chicago, to attending Harvard and Princeton, and becoming the First Lady, I acknowledge that Michelle Obama is the most qualified and powerful women to relate and advocate for Black girls. Her attention to education and its importance reflects in her Reach Higher and Let Girl’s Learn Initiatives. While Michelle Obama has indirectly impacted the lives of Black girls through these initiatives, I conclude that this is not enough since young Black girls have been abused in schools during her time in office. I present scenarios in which the former First Lady Michelle Obama has advocated for Latina and South East Asian girls in a way she has not advocated for Black girls, though the needs of Black girls are the most critical and relatable.
