Abstract
In this chapter, Khateeb discusses how Norwegian author Stian Hole’s picturebook trilogy about Garmann (2006; Garmann’s Summer. Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, Cambridge, 2008; Garmann’s Street. Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, Cambridge, 2010) presents its coming-of-age theme through the protagonist’s encounters with natural landscapes. Khateeb finds that Garmann explores and reflects upon his natural surroundings, and analyses these encounters in dialogue with ecocritical theory that combines Romantic celebrating and contemporary eco-problematizing views on nature. In his analysis, Khateeb shows that the landscapes work both as cultural constructions mirroring Garmann’s development, as well as expressing post-pastoral concerns that challenge too harmonizing and simplistic understandings of the nature–culture relationship.
