Abstract
Consider arithmetic. There are at least three possible ways in which one might consider the statement that xn ยท xn = x2n. We might consider it in terms of the historical context and conditions in which this notation and this particular arithmetic truth became established. This would involve us in talk about culture, civilization, intellectual history, and great mathematicians.
