Abstract
Brian Arbour investigates the role of unhyphenated Americans—white Americans who view their ethnicity as American—in the election of Donald Trump. Concentrated in Appalachia and the highland south, these voters supported Trump in large numbers. Yet, Arbour finds that despite Trump’s strong performance in counties with concentrations of unhyphenated Americans in the primary election, his performance in this region does not represent a stark improvement over previous Republican presidential nominees. Support for Republican presidential nominees has been steadily increasing in this region over time. While the region may be “Trump Country,” it might be better to describe it as “Republican Country.” Arbour concludes with the challenges this trend, and Trump’s election, poses for both the Republican and Democratic parties.
