Abstract
Because most EAP (English for Academic Purposes) practitioners come to EAP from TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Ding and Bruce begin by describing the similarities and differences between the two fields of TESOL and EAP. They then build on this discussion by considering key themes that have emerged from studies that have examined transition experiences of practitioners moving from TESOL to EAP. The themes include transfer of TESOL knowledge, developing specific EAP-related knowledge, initial training, qualifications and ongoing practitioner development. They then discuss actual pathways into EAP along with the institutional status and employment issues of practitioners. Finally, in relation to the ongoing development of a career pathway in EAP, they discuss the areas of classroom practice, discourse community and scholarship and research.
