This chapter is a brief background on spaces of continuous functions and some Sobolev spaces including basic properties, embedding theorems and trace theorems. Hence, we recall some classical definitions and theorems of functional analysis which will be used throughout this book. These results are standard and so they are stated without proofs; for more details and proofs, we refer the readers to the monographs [1, 37, 10, 11, 14].

In this book we only deal with real-valued functions. We assume that the reader is familiar with the basic concepts of general topology and functional analysis.

For a point \(\boldsymbol{x} = (x_{1},\cdots \,,x_{d}) \in \mathbb{R}^{d}\), we denote by D i the differential operator \(\frac{\partial } {\partial x_{i}}\) (1 ≤ i ≤ d).

If \(\boldsymbol{\alpha }= (\alpha _{1},\cdots \,,\alpha _{d})\) is a multi-index, then \(D^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}\) denotes the differential operator of order \(\boldsymbol{\alpha }\), with \(\vert \boldsymbol{\alpha }\vert =\sum \limits _{ i=1}^{d}\alpha _{ i}\), defined by

Let \(\Omega \) be an open set in \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\) with its boundary \(\Gamma \). We denote by \(\overline{\Omega } = \Omega \cup \Gamma \) the closure of \(\Omega \).

For any nonnegative integer m, let \(C^{m}(\Omega )\), respectively \(C^{m}(\overline{\Omega })\), be the space of real functions which, together with all their partial derivatives of orders \(\boldsymbol{\alpha }\), with \(\vert \boldsymbol{\alpha }\vert \leq m\), are continuous on \(\Omega \), respectively, on the closure \(\overline{\Omega }\) of \(\Omega \) in \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\), i.e.

Any function in \(C(\overline{\Omega })\) is bounded and uniformly continuous on \(\Omega \), thus it possesses a unique, bounded, and continuous extension to \(\overline{\Omega }\).

In the sequel, for \((X,\|\cdot \|_{X})\), \((Y,\|\cdot \|_{Y })\) two normed spaces with X ⊂ Y, we shall write \(X\hookrightarrow Y\) to designate the continuously embedding of X in Y provided the identity operator I: X → Y is continuous. This is equivalent, since I is linear, to the existence of a constant C such that

We denote by \(L^{p}(\Omega )\), for 1 ≤ p < +, the space of (equivalence classes of) real functions v defined on \(\Omega \) with the p-power absolutely integrable, i.e.

where \(\,\mathrm{d}x =\mathrm{ d}x_{1}\mathrm{d}x_{2}\ldots \mathrm{d}x_{d}\) is the Lebesque measure. The elements of \(L^{p}(\Omega )\), being equivalence classes of measurable functions, are identical if they are equal almost everywhere (a.e.) on \(\Omega \). Thus, we write v = 0 in \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) if v(x) = 0 a.e. \(x \in \Omega \).

We also denote by \(L^{\infty }(\Omega )\) the space consisting of all (equivalence classes of) measurable real functions v that are essentially bounded on \(\Omega \), i.e. there exists a constant C such that \(\vert v(\boldsymbol{x})\vert \leq C\) a.e. on \(\Omega \).

The space \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) endowed with the norm

If p ∈ [1, ], then the exponent conjugate to p is the number denoted by p defined by the relation

From Riesz representation Theorem 4.1 for Hilbert spaces it follows that, for p ∈ [1, +), the dual space of \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) is the space \((L^{p}(\Omega ))^{{\prime}} = L^{p^{{\prime}} }(\Omega )\) where p is the exponent conjugate to p. The dual space of \(L^{\infty }(\Omega )\) is a space larger than \(L^{1}(\Omega )\) (for more details, see [14, p. 118]).

In the case p = 2, the space \(L^{2}(\Omega )\) is a Hilbert space with respect to the inner product

We say that a measurable function v defined a.e. on \(\Omega \) is locally p-integrable on \(\Omega \) if v ∈ L p(A) for every measurable set \(A \subset \subset \Omega \).

  2. 2)

    For 1 ≤ p ≤∞, every Cauchy sequence in \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) has a subsequence converging pointwise a.e. on \(\Omega \).

    \(L^{p}(\Omega ) \subset L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1}(\Omega )\quad \forall p\text{ with }1 \leq p \leq \infty \).

  4. 4)

    Let \(v \in L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1}(\Omega )\) be such that \(\int \limits _{\Omega }v(\boldsymbol{x})\varphi (\boldsymbol{x})\,\mathrm{d}x = 0\quad \forall \,\varphi \in \mathcal{D}(\Omega )\) . Then \(v(\boldsymbol{x}) = 0\) a.e. on \(\Omega \).

  5. 5)

    \(C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) is dense in \(L^{p}(\Omega )\quad \forall p\text{ with }1 \leq p < \infty \).

The following theorem gives an embedding result for the spaces \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) and some of its consequences.

FormalPara Theorem 2.2.

Let \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\) be an open set with \(\text{vol }(\Omega ) =\int \limits _{\Omega }\,\mathrm{d}x < \infty \) . Then the following statements are valid.

  1. 1)

    For all p, q such that 1 ≤ p ≤ q ≤∞, we have \(L^{q}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow L^{p}(\Omega )\) and

    Suppose that \(v \in L^{p}(\Omega )\) for any 1 ≤ p < ∞ and that there exists a constant C such that \(\|v\|_{L^{p}(\Omega )} \leq C\) . Then \(v \in L^{\infty }(\Omega )\).

To better understand what is the meaning of the differential operator \(D^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}v\) for functions v whose derivatives do not exist in the classical sense, we briefly remind the definition of distributions on \(\Omega \).

We denote by \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\), called the space of test functions, the space \(C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) equipped with the inductive limit topology as in the Schwartz theory of distributions [11].

FormalPara Definition 2.2.

A sequence \(\{\varphi _{k}\}_{k} \subset C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) is said to converge to a function \(\varphi \in C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) in (the sense of the space) \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\), provided the following conditions are satisfied:

The dual space \(\mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\) of \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\) is called the space of (Schwartz) distributions (or, generalized functions). Hence, any distribution T is a linear and continuous functional on \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\), i.e. \(T(\varphi _{k}) \rightarrow T(\varphi )\) in \(\mathbb{R}\) whenever \(\varphi _{k} \rightarrow \varphi\) in \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\). As dual of \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\), the space \(\mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\) is equipped with the weak-star topology: T k  → T in \(\mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\) if and only if \(T_{k}(\varphi ) \rightarrow T(\varphi )\) in \(\mathbb{R}\), for every \(\varphi \in \mathcal{D}(\Omega )\).

Every distribution is infinitely differentiable in the following sense: if \(T \in \mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\) then, for all multi-index \(\boldsymbol{\alpha }\), the function \(D^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}T\) defined on \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\) by

Of course, in this case, \(D^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}u\) is also a distributional partial derivative of u. However, it should be noted that the derivative in the sense of distributions of a function, even sufficiently smooth, may exist, even if it does not exist in the classical sense.

In particular, the relation (2.8) brings out a linear and continuous mapping uT u from \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) into \(\mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\) and so, we may identify the distribution T u with the integrable function u. The same identification may be made for \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\). Thus, we have

Using this result and the definition (2.9), Sobolev [12] expanded in a natural way the space \(L^{p}(\Omega )\) by considering those functions which, for some nonnegative integer m, possess distributional partial derivatives of all orders \(\vert \boldsymbol{\alpha }\vert \leq m\) in \(L^{p}(\Omega )\). This is the definition of the Sobolev space

It is easy to see that, if the open set \(\Omega \) is bounded, the seminorm \(\vert \cdot \vert _{W^{m,p}(\Omega )}\) is a norm over \(W_{0}^{m,p}(\Omega )\) equivalent to the norm \(\|\cdot \|_{W^{m,p}(\Omega )}\).

In the case p = 2, we use the notation

Many different symbols are being used to denote these norms, when no confusion may occur: \(\|\cdot \|_{m,p,\Omega }\) or \(\|\cdot \|_{m,p}\) instead of \(\|\cdot \|_{W^{m,p}(\Omega )}\), \(\|\cdot \|_{m,\Omega }\) or \(\|\cdot \|_{m}\) instead of \(\|\cdot \|_{H^{m}(\Omega )}\) and \(\|\cdot \|_{0,\Omega }\) or \(\|\cdot \|_{0}\) instead of \(\|\cdot \|_{L^{2}(\Omega )}\).

If m ≥ 1 and 1 ≤ p < , we denote by \(W^{-m,p^{{\prime}} }(\Omega )\) the dual space of \(W_{0}^{m,p}(\Omega )\), p being the exponent conjugate to p (in fact, \(W^{-m,p^{{\prime}} }(\Omega )\) is the notation for a space of some distributions on \(\Omega \) which is isometrically isomorphic to the dual space \((W_{0}^{m,p}(\Omega ))^{{\prime}}\); for details, see [1]). Endowed with the norm

the space \(W^{-m,p^{{\prime}} }(\Omega )\) is a Banach space which is separable and reflexive if 1 < p < . Here \(\langle \cdot,\cdot \rangle\) is the duality pairing between \(W^{-m,p^{{\prime}} }(\Omega )\) and \(W_{0}^{m,p}(\Omega )\).

We note that if X, Y are two Hilbert spaces such that \(X\hookrightarrow Y\) dense, then (see, for instance, [2, p. 51]) \(Y ^{{\ast}}\hookrightarrow X^{{\ast}}\) dense, where Y and X denote their dual spaces.

If \(\Omega \) is bounded, then \(\mathcal{D}(\Omega )\) is dense in \(H_{0}^{m}(\Omega )\), and so, we can identify the dual space \(H^{-m}(\Omega )\) of \(H_{0}^{m}(\Omega )\) with a subspace of \(\mathcal{D}^{{\prime}}(\Omega )\):

Now, we notice that most of the important results involving Sobolev spaces are first obtained for regular functions and then extended to Sobolev spaces. The density theorems and the embedding theorems show how and whether an element of a Sobolev space can be approximated by smooth functions. Since these theorems require additional regularity properties for the open set \(\Omega \), we recall some definitions of them. Later, in Chaps. 5 and 8, we will use some of these assumptions on \(\Omega \) for getting regularity properties of the solutions of some concrete variational inequalities.

FormalPara Definition 2.4.

We say that the open subset \(\Omega \) of \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\) has the cone property if there exists a finite open bounded cover {O j } j ∈ J of the boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \) and, for any j, there exists a cone C j with the vertex at 0, such that, for all \(\boldsymbol{x} \in O_{j} \cap \Omega \), \(\boldsymbol{x} + C_{j}\) do not intersect \(O_{j} \cap \Gamma \).

FormalPara Definition 2.5.

We say that the open set \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\) has the segment property if there exists a locally finite open cover {U j } j of the boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \) and a corresponding sequence \(\{\boldsymbol{y}_{j}\}_{j}\) of nonzero vectors such that if \(\boldsymbol{x} \in \overline{\Omega } \cap U_{j}\) for some j, then \(\boldsymbol{x} + t\boldsymbol{y}_{j} \in \Omega \) for 0 < t < 1. In this case, \(\Omega \) must have (d − 1)-dimensional boundary and cannot simlutaneously lie on both sides of its boundary.

FormalPara Definition 2.6.

Let r ≥ 1 an integer. An open bounded set \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\) is said to be \(\mathcal{C}^{r}\)-smooth (or, of class \(\mathcal{C}^{r}\)) if there exists a covering of the boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \) by a finite number of bounded open subsets \(\{U_{j}\}_{j\in J} \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\) and, for any j ∈ J, there exists a C r-homeomorphisms θ j such that:

  1. (i)

    \(\theta _{j}(U_{j}) = S =\{\boldsymbol{ y} = (\boldsymbol{y}^{{\prime}},y_{d}) \in \mathbb{R}^{d};\,\vert \boldsymbol{y}^{{\prime}}\vert < 1,\,\vert y_{d}\vert < 1\}\),

  2. (ii)

    \(\theta _{j}(U_{j} \cap \Omega ) = S_{+} =\{\boldsymbol{ y} \in S;\,y_{d} > 0\}\),

  3. (iii)

    \(\theta _{j}(U_{j} \cap \Gamma ) = S_{0} =\{\boldsymbol{ y} \in S;\,y_{d} = 0\}\).

Concerning the approximation by smooth functions, we have the following results (see, for instance, [13, p. 11], [9, p. 44], or [8, p. 40]).

FormalPara Theorem 2.3.

Let \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\) be an open bounded set. Then, the following approximation results are true.

  1. 1)

    \(C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) is dense in \(W_{0}^{m,p}(\Omega )\).

  2. 2)

    If \(\ \Omega \) has the cone property, then \(C^{\infty }(\overline{\Omega })\) is dense in \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\).

  3. 3)

    If \(\ \Omega \) is \(\mathcal{C}^{\infty }\) -smooth, then \(\mathcal{D}(\overline{\Omega })\) is dense in \(H^{m}(\Omega )\) .

We now recall the following Sobolev embedding theorem (see [1, 9, 13] for more details and proofs) which will be used frequently in this book.

FormalPara Theorem 2.4 (Sobolev Embedding Theorem).

Suppose that the open bounded set \(\Omega \) has the cone property and 1 ≤ p < ∞. Then, the following assertions hold.

  1. 1)

    If mp < d, then

    1. i)

      \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow L^{p^{{\ast}} }(\Omega )\) where \(p^{{\ast}} = \frac{\mathrm{d}p} {\mathrm{d} - mp}\).

    2. ii)

      \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow _{c}L^{q}(\Omega )\) for any q with 1 ≤ q < p .

  2. 2)

    If mp = d, then

    \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow _{c}L^{q}(\Omega )\) for any 1 ≤ q < ∞.

  3. 3)

    If mp > d, then

    1. i)

      \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow _{c}L^{q}(\Omega )\) for any 1 ≤ q < ∞.

    2. ii)

      \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\hookrightarrow C^{k}(\overline{\Omega })\) for any integer k with \(\frac{mp - d} {p} - 1 \leq k < \frac{mp - d} {p}\).

As a consequence of this theorem we have the following particular cases that we shall often use:

We note that a function \(v \in H^{1}(\Omega )\) is not necessary continuous on \(\Omega \), neither on \(\overline{\Omega }\), and so, we may not define, in the classical sense, the values of v on the boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \). The trace theorems show how one can define, in the trace sense, the restriction on the boundary \(\Gamma \) of a function which is not necessary continuous. Their purpose is to determine the space of functions defined on the boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \) containing the traces of functions in \(W^{m,p}(\Omega )\).

The next theorem (see [8, p. 40] or [13, p. 9]) allows to define every function \(v \in H^{1}(\Omega )\) almost everywhere on \(\Gamma \).

FormalPara Theorem 2.5 (Trace Theorem for \(H^{1}(\Omega )\)).

Let \(\Omega \) be an open bounded set in \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\) of class \(\mathcal{C}^{1}\) with its boundary \(\Gamma \) . Then, one can uniquely define the trace \(\gamma _{0}v\) of \(v \in H^{1}(\Omega )\) on \(\Gamma \) such that γ 0 v coincides with the usual definition

Now, if \(v \in C^{m}(\overline{\Omega })\), let \(\boldsymbol{\gamma }v\) be the linear mapping defined by

The problem of characterizing the image of the space \(H^{m}(\Omega )\) under the trace operator involves Sobolev spaces of fractional order. These spaces can be defined in different ways but, for \(\Omega \) sufficiently smooth, these definitions give the same space.

A compact definition (see [1]) of \(H^{s}(\Omega )\), for s a real number, is the space obtained as the closure of \(C^{\infty }(\Omega )\) in the norm

where s = [s] +{ s} with [s] an integer and 0 < { s} < 1.

Another approach (see [2, 10]) for the definition of the space \(H^{s}(\Omega )\) uses the Fourier transformation of a function.

FormalPara Definition 2.7.

The Fourier transformation of a function \(v \in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\) is the function \(\hat{v} \in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\) defined by

For any real number s ≥ 0, the space \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\), of test functions of rapid decay, is defined by:

and \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{d})^{{\prime}}\), called the space of temperated distributions, is the dual space of \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\).

Then, the fractional order Sobolev space \(H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\) is defined by

If s < 0, one denotes by \(H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\) the dual space of \(H^{-s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\).

If \(\Omega \) is sufficiently smooth, then we define \(H^{s}(\Omega )\) to be the space of restrictions to \(\Omega \) of functions of \(H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\). The boundary \(\Gamma \) of \(\Omega \) can be identified, by means of local coordinates, to \(\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\), and we can define \(H^{s}(\Gamma )\) to be isomorphic to the Sobolev space \(H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d-1})\).

If the open bounded set \(\Omega \) of \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\) is \(\mathcal{C}^{\infty }\)-smooth, then \(\mathcal{D}(\overline{\Omega })\) is dense in \(H^{m}(\Omega )\) and so, it is possible to extend by continuity the classical definition (2.15) to a generalized one \(\boldsymbol{\gamma }v\) for \(v \in H^{m}(\Omega )\) (see, for instance, [9, p. 44], [10, p. 142]).

FormalPara Theorem 2.6 (Trace Theorem for \(H^{m}(\Omega )\)).

Suppose that the open bounded set \(\Omega \) is \(C^{\infty }\) -smooth. Then, for any m > 0 integer, the trace operator

Therefore, the space \(H^{m-j-1/2}(\Gamma )\) can be seen as the space of traces of order j of \(H^{m}(\Omega )\). In addition, the kernel of the operator \(\boldsymbol{\gamma }\) is the space \(H_{0}^{m}(\Omega )\), the completion of \(C_{0}^{\infty }(\Omega )\) in the norm \(\|\cdot \|_{H^{m}(\Omega )}\).

Finally, we recall the following result (see [1, p. 114]).

Suppose that \(\Omega \) is sufficiently smooth. Then
