Die brusterhaltende Therapie (BET) beim Mammakarzinom gilt heute als Standard für die Mehrheit der betroffenen Patientinnen. Durch fortlaufende chirurgische Weiterentwicklungen, einen interdisziplinären Therapieansatz und lokaltherapeutische Qualitätskontrollmaßnahmen im Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Studien konnte die Rate an BET auch im multizentrischen Setting auf bis zu 73% gesteigert werden (Jakesz et al., 2003). An einzelnen hochspezialisierten Behandlungszentren liegt die BET-Rate sogar höher. Damit dieser hohe Standard erreicht und gehalten werden kann, bedarf es der engen koordinierten Zusammenarbeit verschiedener Ab — teilungen und Fachrichtungen. Im Falle der BET sind vor allem die Pathologie, die Radiologie, die internistische Onkologie und die Strahlentherapie als wesentliche Partner zu nennen. Regelmäßige gemeinsame Besprechungen schaffen einen kontinuierlichen Informationsaustausch und den wichtigen persönlichen Kontakt. Die Errungenschaft der BET ist also nicht nur eine Errungenschaft der Chirurgie, sondern vielmehr der immer wichtiger werdenden interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit.
