Bis in die 1960er Jahre hat eine Mammographieeinheit nicht zu den Routinebestandteilen der meisten Röntgenabteilungen gezählt. Danach, in erster Linie aufgrund der Inzidenzzunahme von Brustkrebs in den Industrienationen, hat sich dies drastisch geändert. Heute zählt die Mammographie zu den zahlenmäßig am häufigsten durchgeführten Röntgenuntersuchungen. Länderweite mammographische Screening-Programme für Brustkrebs wurden eingeführt.
