Zusammenfassung
Kräuter, Sträucher oder Bäume mit ungeteilten, oft gegenständigen Blättern. Blüten meist auffallend gefärbt, zwittrig, regelmässig oder zygomorph, in verschieden gestalteten Blütenständen. Kelch- und Kronblätter 4–6, frei, auf der becherförmigen bis röhrigen, hohlen Blütenachse inseriert; Staubblätter oft doppelt so viele wie Kronblätter, aber auch weniger oder mehr; Fruchtknoten oberständig (d.h. nicht oder kaum mit der hohlen Blütenachse verwachsen), l–6fächerig, mit vielen Samenanlagen mit 2 Integumenten. Früchte kapselartig. Samen ohne Endosperm.
