Zusammenfassung
Sträucher oder Bäume mit nebenblattlosen, ungeteilten Blättern. Blüten regelmässig, zwittrig oder eingeschlechtig, einzeln oder in verschieden gestalteten, blattachselständigen Blütenständen; Blütenboden hohl und röhrig verlängert (Hypanthium); Kelch 2–5zipflig, oft korollinisch; Krone meistens fehlend; Staubblätter in gleicher oder doppelter Zahl wie die Kelchzipfel, dem röhrigen Hypanthium aufsitzend. Fruchtknoten oberständig, einfächerig, mit einer Samenanlage mit 2 Integumenten. Nussartige Früchte, die jedoch vom fleischig werdenden Hypanthium umschlossen werden und deshalb beeren- oder steinfruchtartig erscheinen (Scheinfrüchte). Samen ohne oder mit wenig Endosperm.
