Abstract

The ultimate strength of a masonry structure can be significantly increased by constructing two wythe (brick-to-brick or brick-to-block) walls interconnected each other by a grouted (reinforced or not) collar joint. Having been assured adequate shear transfer between the two wythe walls so as composite action to be considered, the aforementioned type of masonry structures is called composite masonry or composite wall.
