Zusammenfassung
Ich bin schon lange von den römischen Zahlzeichen fasziniert. Es besteht fast ein Widerspruch zwischen der Einfachheit der ersten Ziffern und der verwirrenden Komplexität der folgenden. Die ersten drei Zahlzeichen, I, II und III, folgen einer offensichtlichen Regel: Sie enthalten so viele Striche, wie Einheiten gemeint sind. Die Zahl IV jedoch durchbricht diese Regel, denn sie führt das neue Zeichen V ein, dessen Bedeutung alles andere als offensichtlich ist, und eine Subtraktion, 5–1, die willkürlich erscheint — warum nicht 6–2, 7–3 oder auch 2 × 2?
Ich empfehle Ihnen, all Ihre Überzeugungen in Frage zu stellen, mit Ausnahme der, daß zwei und zwei vier ergeben.
