Abstract

On the occasion of the First Irvine H. Page Lectureship at The Second IUPHAR Satellite Meeting on Serotonin, it is fitting that the contributions of Dr. Page be reviewed by current investigators. As Dr. Page points out in the above quotation, the significant and unparalleled advances made in the field of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) research during the past decade have been a direct result of more than 40 years of 5-HT research. Although 5-HT has intrigued scientists for more than a century (see Table 1), the modern scientific “birth” of 5-HT can be dated to Dr. Page’s Science paper of 1948. He and his co-authors stated: “We would like provisionally to name it serotonin, which indicates that its source is serum and its activity is one of causing constriction” (Rapport et al. 1948).

Science is a superb edifice that rises, level upon level, built by the untiring, creative but critical investigators of each generation.
