Abstract

This first chapter is devoted mainly to definitions, some examples and a few basic properties. Though generalized polygons are graph-theoretically an (a posteriori) immediate generalization of projective planes, the definition requires some preliminaries such as distance in geometries. The preparation of the definition of a generalized polygon is the goal of the first section.
