Abstract
Women and men have different travel requirements and different transport options due to their different roles in society. Stereotypes and prejudices about women’s abilities can affect their mobility, as well as their participation and presence in the transport sector. This, in turn, affects their access to employment, services, and cultural resources. A gender-based analysis is critical for understanding women’s mobility, their participation in the transport sector, their access to services, and their road safety (women are more affected by accidents but contribute less to them). This chapter analyzes the gendered aspects of mobility, focusing on women’s right to movement, their professional presence in the transport sector, and the impacts on women of road safety issues. This chapter presents and examines experiences from European countries in terms of the transport sector and road safety.

Notes
- 1.
“Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state” and “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.”
- 2.
Road safety is often managed through national road accident registers, whose accuracy differs according to the used tools (manual collection and intelligent collection system) and the level of training and involvement of the staff in charge.
