Three Axial Ages of Religion, Law and Global Constitutionalism

Abstract

The thesis is that there are three Axial Ages of Religion, Law and Global Constitutionalism. The paper explains the enduring importance of Jaspers' social philosophical theory of the Axial Age and its now apparent weaknesses. The main objection is that it does not consider the importance of the (r)evolutionary invention of modern national and international law at the beginning of the last millennium. Moreover, it underestimates (as political philosophy in general) the world-revolutionary side of the constitutional revolutions of the eighteenth century, which still shape our world today.
