Abstract
This book is Volume Two of the two-volume work The Palgrave Handbook of Religion and State. Whereas Volume One of this set examined religion and state philosophically, theologically, legally, and politically, this volume examines the subject historically and geographically. The relationship between religion and the state in the Western Hemisphere has been predominately between Christianity and differing forms of democracy, the relationship in the East is much more complex. Its history is longer, the plurality of religions is greater, and it is from all of this that the American Constitutional Experiment was conceived.
