Abstract

The Smart MicroGrid based on renewable energies is attracting a great interest as a sustainable solution that provides a cheaper and more reliable alternative to the centralized grid while less environmental impact, and allowing access to electricity, especially for remote areas and the isolated communities of different natures (Industrial, Residential…etc.). It is a small-scale power grid, with its distributed local energy sources, loads and energy storage systems that can operate connected or disconnected to the main grid. However, the efficient operation of this power system depends essentially on the structural arrangement and the configuration of its various components as well as facing the main issues which are the random and the intermittent nature of the renewable energies, the problems of harmonics and resonances that can be generated and the islanding capacity. This article reviews the most important classifications of MicroGrid technology, comparing them in terms of efficiency, and discussing the advantages and the drawbacks of each type, its deals also with the different strategies of the control, the power sharing and the optimization of the isolated power system, We will also give an overview of the different architectures of Smart-MicroGrid management systems, and we will end by listing the challenges and the future opportunities.
