The Worldwide Face of Elder Abuse

Abstract

“Steps should be taken both by state legislatures and by state and local service agencies to emphasize and provide client control of intervention decisions…Stated simply, a philosophy of minimal intervention means that the client should always get the benefit of any doubts or ambiguities about his capacity to make his own choices, that those who would intervene…should be placed on the shortest possible leash, and that involuntary intervention should occur only in the direst emergencies”. Excerpt from the keynote presentation made at the National Law and Social Work Seminar on Improving Protective Services for Older Americans.
