Abstract

In recent years, the study of quality of life (QOL) in tourism destinations has increased. This chapter reviews some of the primary research on QOL in general and specific to tourism. It also provides an overview of stakeholder theory and its use in tourism research. Tourism has the potential to impact the QOL in a community resulting in stakeholders’ perceptions of tourism. The QOL impacts of tourism must be considered in community planning. Many studies found that stakeholders perceive these impacts which can result in the way tourists are treated in a community and the ultimate success of tourism as an economic activity. Several theoretical frameworks have been used as the foundation of tourism and QOL studies. One theory that is useful for the study of tourism planning is stakeholder theory which suggests stakeholder involvement is critical for development of a successful and sustainable tourism sector. Many studies proposed models of stakeholder engagement, while others investigated one or more stakeholder groups and their perceptions of tourism. Few studies described an entire stakeholder engagement process from tourism plan initiation though to implementation. This chapter rectifies that deficiency by provide an example of a recent tourism planning process that included substantial stakeholder engagement and was motivated by the need to improve a community’s QOL.
