Abstract
The deployment of renewable energy sources is a must to face global warming and decrease the emissions of CO2. PV systems are largely used as a source to supply loads through microgrids that prioritize the energy provided by renewable energy sources over other sources. To ensure the safety and safe operation of microgrids, it is mandatory to use an energy management system. In this paper, the modeling of a standalone DC microgrid with energy storage has been done in MATLAB/Simulink controlled by a PI controller to obtain an energy management system (EMS). The microgrid comprises a PV system as a supply source connected with a boost converter and a modified P&O MPPT algorithm to track the maximum power, a battery as a storage device with a bi-directional DC-DC converter, DC loads, and a control system. The objectives of the EMS are providing power to meet the load demand, balancing the DC bus voltage, and extending the battery life.
