Zusammenfassung
Sportvereine nehmen eine zentrale Stellung in der norwegischen Gesellschaft ein, und Untersuchungen zeigen, dass 93 % der norwegischen Jugendlichen Mitglied in einem Sportverein waren. Der Hauptzweck der Vereine besteht offensichtlich darin, ihren Mitgliedern Sport anzubieten. Die Sportvereine, öffentliche Institutionen und Sportorganisationen haben jedoch auch Erwartungen an die Vereine, die über den Sport hinausgehen: Sie sollen die öffentliche Gesundheit fördern, zur sozialen Integration beitragen, die Demokratie stärken und ehrenamtliche Arbeit ermöglichen. In diesem Kapitel präsentiere ich Fakten darüber, inwieweit Sportvereine solche Funktionen erfüllen und diskutiere, warum sie dies tun oder nicht tun. Einerseits leisten Sportvereine offensichtlich einen Beitrag in all diesen vier Bereichen. Andererseits sind die Beiträge zu diesen sozialen Funktionen Nebeneffekte ihrer Haupttätigkeit: dem Sport. Dies führt in vielen Fällen zu einer Diskrepanz zwischen den erklärten politischen Zielen und dem, was die Vereine tatsächlich tun, um diese sozialen Funktionen zu erfüllen. Obwohl Sportvereine also neben der Organisation von Sport auch wichtige soziale Funktionen erfüllen, gibt es eindeutig ein Potenzial für mehr. Gleichzeitig besteht das Dilemma, dass eine Ausweitung der nicht-sportbezogenen Funktionen der Sportvereine den Sportorganisationen schaden könnte.
