Zusammenfassung
In Deutschland gibt es rund 90.000 Sportvereine, die einem breiten Spektrum unterschiedlicher Bevölkerungsgruppen die Teilnahme an bezahlbaren Sportangeboten ermöglichen. Damit können die deutschen Sportvereine als Basis für unterschiedliche sportbezogene Bereiche angesehen werden, darunter Breiten- und Freizeitsport, Gesundheitssport sowie Leistungs- und Spitzensport. Indem sie ihren Mitgliedern sowohl sportliche als auch außersportliche Angebote (z. B. geselliges Beisammensein) unterbreiten, erfüllen die Vereine wichtige gesellschaftliche Funktionen. Die Ergebnisse der zugrundeliegenden europäischen Vergleichsstudie, die sowohl die Sportvereine als auch deren Mitglieder und Ehrenamtliche berücksichtigt, untermauern diese Funktionen. Die Ergebnisse sowohl der Vereinsbefragung als auch der Mitgliederbefragung in Deutschland zeigen, dass Sportvereine eine wichtige Rolle für das Gemeinwohl spielen, weil Vereine in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen aktiv sind, die auf der politischen Agenda stehen und daher eine wichtige Rolle in der deutschen Sportpolitik spielen. Zu diesen Bereichen gehören unter anderem Gesundheitsförderung, soziale Integration, sozialer Zusammenhalt, Bildung, demokratische Teilhabe und ehrenamtliches Engagement. In ihrer Rolle als wichtige Akteure für das Gemeinwohl können Vereine sowohl direkte öffentliche Unterstützung in Form von Zuschüssen als auch indirekte Unterstützung wie die kostenlose oder kostengünstige Nutzung von öffentlichen Sportanlagen erhalten.
